Quick TIP | Add Timer to a Quiz in Microsoft Teams Assignments

MS Forms is an excellent way to make quizzes to test your students. The latest MS Teams update makes setting up timers in forms super-easy. This blog post shows you how to do just that, saving you time in the classroom, leading to a smoother learning experience for your students.



Set timer in Microsoft Forms

Previously, timers had to be added within Microsoft Forms. Now they can be set up in Assignments within Teams.

  • 1. Attach a form/quiz to your assignment.
  • 2. Tap on the attached form/quiz to open it.

  • 3. This takes you into Microsoft Forms. Hit the three dots in the top right-hand corner of the window.
  • 4. Select Settings.

  • 5. Scroll down to the Options for Responses section.
  • 6. Tick the box next to Set Time Duration.
  • 7. Choose How Many Minutes you’d like to give your students to fill out the form/complete the quiz.

  • 1. Open the assignment.
  • 2. Add a form to the assignment.
  • 3. Hit the Drop-down Menu next to the Timer Icon.
  • 4. Select the desired form/quiz time limit.

A time limit is now displayed at the start of the quiz/form.

After the student selects Click to Start, the timer will begin the count down at the top of the forms window.

Mobile view

Like the desktop view, on a Mobile Device, the timer will still be displayed at the top of the screen, even if the student scrolls down the page.

The students also have the option to minimise the timer using the small arrow if they find the timeline distracting.

Schedule Chat Messages in Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams now enables users to schedule chat messages. Scheduling chat messages enables users to plan when chat messages will be sent ahead of time. This feature:

  • Increases flexibility of time management.
  • Minimises interruption of busy coworkers.
  • Avoids disrupting coworkers outside of work time.
  • This article will guide you through scheduling Teams chat messages and demonstrate how these messages are received by the recipient.



    Scheduling Chat Messages in Teams

    In order to schedule a message in Microsoft Teams, simply:

      1. Type your message in the chat window.
      2. Right click on the send button.

      3. Select the desired time and date of the scheduled message. You can schedule a message up to a week in advance and select send times at half an hour intervals.

      4. Tap Send at Scheduled Time.

      5. Blue text detailing the chat message’s scheduling information will appear in the chat window.

      6. Hit the send button.
      7. You’ll know that the chat message has been scheduled by the presence of the clock icon next to the scheduled message.

    Editing Scheduled Messages in Teams

    If you need to edit scheduled messages before they’re sent, it can be easily edited before or after scheduling has been completed.

      1. Tap the blue text in the chat window.

      2. Select the desired time and date of the scheduled message. You can schedule a message up to a week in advance and select send times at half an hour intervals.

      4. Tap send.
      5. You’ll know that the chat message has been scheduled by the presence of the clock icon next to the scheduled message.

    Editing Scheduled Messages After Completing Scheduling

      1. Hit the three dots next to the scheduled message.
      2. Select Edit.

      3. Tap inside the chat window and edit the message.
      4. Select the tick button when you’re happy with the edits. Select the cross button if you want to cancel the edit’s you’ve made.

      5. You’ll know that the chat message has been scheduled by the presence of the clock icon next to the scheduled message.

    Deleting your Scheduled Message

    Inevitably, there’ll be times when scheduled messages will need to be deleted. Fortunately, this is also very simple to achieve:

      1. Hit the three dots next to the scheduled message.
      2. Select Delete.

      3. Tap Okay.
      4. Alternatively, tap the blue text and select cancel scheduled time to cancel the sending of the message.

    What does the Recipient see?

    The recipient won’t see your message until the scheduled time and date.

    The message looks the same as a sent message that wasn’t scheduled. The recipient will also be able to see if the message was edited before it was automatically sent. There is nothing that indicates whether the message was scheduled or not.
